The letterbox is a familiar, everyday object bearing witness to a passing era.
A private object representing its owner in a public space, one that facilitates an intimate connection with people near and far, often acquiring its owner’s unique design and character.
Technology allows a simpler and speedier connection between people, but at the same time a more brief and less intimate one. It negates the need for a physical box, located outside our places of residence, to receive the envelopes and written pages.
With the intention of documenting this small feature of a rapidly changing world, I started the letterbox (and postbox) project in 2011, part of which I am presenting here. In some of the photos you can see the unique character of the boxes, personalized by the owner. There are boxes having survived for generations and those showing a physical deterioration and decline in importance, shortly before they disappear for good.
